Is this the Middle East?Middle Eastern representation in video games
“Is this the Middle East?” investigates representation of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) within a selection of video games. I’m interested in the patterns, the repetitive artefacts, places and texts, unique to games claiming to be set in the MENA region. These objects become archetypes. Are these photo-realistic environments also realistic in the scenes they portray, or do they become another backdrop for war-related games?
Using photogrammetry to reconstruct these environments, I address the implications of seeing an abundance of often over-simplified images of the Middle East, especially in a world where video games are indeed not only becoming a global phenomenon, but also a way of encountering other cultures.
This website serves as a digital archive of the representation of MENA in
video games. It collects the
from several games, as a tool
of investigation: What is the Middle East according to these games? ENTER
